Pet accidents happen — but the lingering smell doesn't have to stay. Regular household cleaners often fail because they don't break down uric acid crystals. This guide shows you how to remove pet urine stains and odours permanently using enzymatic cleaners and natural ingredients.
What You'll Need
- Enzymatic cleaner (Nature's Miracle, Rocco & Roxie, or Simple Solution) — essential for breaking down uric acid
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Dish soap (Dawn works best)
- Paper towels or old towels
- Spray bottle
- Black light (UV flashlight) — to find old stains
- Rubber gloves
Step 1: Find All Accident Spots
You can't clean what you can't see. Old urine stains are invisible to the naked eye.
Use a Black Light
Turn off the lights and shine a UV black light over carpets and upholstery. Old urine stains will glow yellow or greenish-white.
Step 2: Blot Fresh Accidents Immediately
Blot, Don't Rub!
Use paper towels or old towels to blot as much urine as possible. Press firmly to absorb liquid deep in the carpet. Never rub — rubbing spreads the stain.
Apply Cold Water
Pour a small amount of cold water on the area and blot again. This dilutes the urine.
Method 1: Enzymatic Cleaner (Most Effective)
Enzymatic cleaners are specially formulated to break down uric acid crystals permanently. This is the only method that truly eliminates the smell.
Saturate the Area
Apply enough enzymatic cleaner to soak the affected area — not just the surface. Follow manufacturer instructions.
Let It Sit
Allow the cleaner to sit for 10-15 minutes (or as directed). Enzymes need time to break down the urine.
Blot Dry
Blot with a clean cloth. Do not rinse — let the cleaner air dry completely. The enzymes continue working as they dry.
Check with Black Light
Once dry, check with a black light. If the stain still glows, repeat the process.
Method 2: Vinegar & Baking Soda (Natural Alternative)
If you don't have enzymatic cleaner, this natural method works for fresh stains.
Apply Vinegar Solution
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Spray onto the stain and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Blot and Sprinkle Baking Soda
Blot the area, then generously sprinkle baking soda over the stain.
Add Hydrogen Peroxide (Optional)
Mix 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon dish soap. Spray over the baking soda. The mixture will fizz — let it dry completely.
Vacuum
Once completely dry, vacuum thoroughly. Repeat if the smell remains.
Method 3: For Upholstery and Mattresses
Blot Immediately
Remove as much urine as possible with paper towels.
Use Enzymatic Cleaner
Apply enzymatic cleaner. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Blot and Air Dry
Blot with a clean cloth and allow to air dry completely. Use a fan to speed up drying — moisture can lead to mould in mattresses.
Method 4: For Hard Floors (Tile, Wood, Laminate)
Wipe Up Immediately
Use paper towels to remove all urine. For wood floors, act fast — urine can damage the finish.
Clean with Enzymatic Cleaner or Vinegar
Spray the area and wipe clean. For grout, use a brush to work the cleaner into the lines.
Rinse and Dry
Rinse with water and dry thoroughly.
How to Stop Pets from Re-offending
- Use enzymatic cleaner thoroughly — pets return to spots they can still smell
- Keep pets away during cleaning — block off the area until completely dry
- Use deterrent sprays — commercial pet repellents discourage repeat accidents
- Provide easy access — ensure your pet can get outside or to their litter box
- Rule out medical issues — sudden accidents may indicate a UTI or other health problem
